Wikipedia: André-Charles Boulle (Paris, November 11, 1642 - there, February 29, 1732) was a famous and influential French cabinetmaker, who also distinguished himself as an architect, sculptor, woodcarver, metal founder, draftsman and painter. He perfected the Boulle marquetry technique named after him. The oak cabinets were glued with sawn-out tortoiseshell, ivory, ebony, copper, silver, pewter or brass. The inlaid metals were often decorated with ornaments. To reinforce the cohesion, the cabinets were fitted with gilt bronze fittings, made by Boulle himself. [1] Its precious and ornate style was imitated again in the 19th century.
