Beautiful and in perfect condition English bracket clock with quarter hour strike on 7 bells, made for the Spanish market.
The oak cabinet is veneered with Cuba mahogany and highly polished. The bronze case ornaments are beautifully gold plated.
The partly gold-plated dial with silver-plated chapter ring and medallion signed "Higgs & Diego Evans, Londres"
is in excellent condition.
This clockmaker is featured in "Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the world" by GH Baillie.
The real name is James Evans, the name "Diego" was used to make the clock more attractive to Spain.
Very beautifully made movement with verge escapement and a triple fusee with gut string. This clockwork is beautifully engraved on the back with many floral motifs and also signed with "Higgs & Diego Evans, Belfa real, Londres".
Every fifteen minutes a melody is played on 7 bells, which expands every fifteen minutes by 7 beats to the full hour, when the clock is playing its full melody (4 x 7 tones/notes) followed by striking the number of hours on the bigger bell.
At the top of the dial is a large hand with which you can switch the striking mechanism on and off.
