Pierre le Roy à Meaux
Stunning and unique small single-hand lantern clock with striking mechanism.
The mirror (central part of the dial) is beautifully engraved with floral motifs and signed "Pierre le Roy, à Meaux".
A similar small lantern clock by this clockmaker is featured in the book 'Franse lantaarn klokken' by Ton Bollen on page 97; see photos.
This clockmaker is also mentioned in the book "Dictionnaire des Horlogers Francais" by Tardy, which states that he was already active in Amsterdam in 1686. This explains the special engraving on the fret as well, beautifully and finely executed with flowers and a Tulip, which is quite rare. According to Bollen, this is due to Flemish influence.
A beautiful cage-shaped (birdcage) movement with a verge escapement (short pendulum). Day runner with striking mechanism regulated by a locking wheel and striking only on the hour. The drive is via knob cords with two larger weights and two smaller counterweights.
The small clock hangs from a bracket and pins, the so-called "Hook and Spikes".
The case has been cleaned and the numeral ring is silver-plated; the whole is lacquered.
Dating of the clock ca. 1710 - 20, Louis XV period.
Dimensions: H x W: 26 cm (incl. top pinnacle) x 9.5 cm (dial diameter)
